Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio visited Marawi on Thursday, November 16, a month after her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, declared the city liberated from local terrorist groups that had occupied it for 5 months.as representatives of the "Tapang at Malasakit Alliance for the Philippines."
She was accompanied by Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano, wife of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, President Duterte's defeated running mate in 2016.
Her first stop in Marawi was at a public elementary school around lunch time, then at Marawi City Hall.
They went to the main battle area where ISIS-inspired Maute group holed up during the five-month fighting. They also lighted candles and offered prayers and flowers inside the St. Mary's Cathedral.
Incidentally, Duterte and Cayetano visited Marawi on the same day Vice President Leni Robredo went to the city to hand over medicines worth P500,000 each for Amai Pakpak Medical Center and the City Health Center of Marawi.
Duterte-Carpio gave to the Marawi city government the P5 million that Davao City had pledged to donate.
The presidential daughter did the rounds as part of her Tapang at Malasakit tour. She launched the coalition in late October in Manila to unite Filipinos and put an end to "destructive politicking," but fueling speculations she could be testing the waters for a national campaign.
Sara Duterte-Carpio personally delivered on Thursday, November 16, to the local government of Marawi the city's P5 million donation sourced from the city's disaster funds. Last week, the Davao City Council has given legislative authority to the mayor to utilize the remaining funds for disaster.
Mayor Cayetano also gave Marawi P5 million pledged by Taguig City.
